But the killer and quarry share reciprocal nightmares. Each man crumbles as the hunt draws to its close. In the end, the disturbing dreams merge in a most unexpected way.
Boutros spins a dandy thriller that greatly satisfies. If I Should Die Before I Wake leaves the reader uneasy, perhaps glancing over the shoulder before pouring another shot of rotgut to calm the nerves. This story is a recommended read for fans who love thrillers mixed with a touch of unsettling fantasy.

This story was a pretty good tale, and it was worth the price to me--it was free at the time.
Excellent short story - a real page-turner. Looking forward to more from this author.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I rate it as a solid four stars. This was a really great story, filled with excellent writing, descriptive detail, and good suspense. The premise was intriguing and well-executed. The story drew me in and made me intensely curious as to what the outcome would be. It was a short read, and I liked the length--it was just right. I recommend this book.

This is a very short book. It is hard to sympathize with the two main characters. Simon Wallis is a criminal on the run from his boss after he is discovered embezzling money. Frank Burke is the assassin sent to Montreal to kill him. If Simon is unlikable, Frank is a pure psychopath, ready to kill anyone to protect his identity. Though both are well drawn, we don't learn a great deal about either's past. And we don't need to. The thrill of the chase and its ultimate outcome is enough.
Boutros expertly weaves the two stands of his tale into a cohesive story. He draws often ironic parallels in the two men's experiences. For example, the hitman dreams of being on the run while his prey has dreams of being the hunter. The ending took me by surprise, but was quite apt.
All in all, an excellent if short read.
